A quick update on what we've been up to

It's been a while since our last blog post, and I wanted to update you on all the new features we’ve been working on. You may have seen most of it online or in the apps, but here is a summary nonetheless.

A new and shiny Checklist iOS App

The past few months have been big for our iOS app. We scrapped the previous version, which never met our standards, and finally launched a completely new Checklist app for iOS. The app includes all the basic functionality of the old version but is built on a new code base. Since its launch a few weeks ago, our users have experienced a much more robust app with a cleaner design that aligns with iOS guidelines and our Android app. It also features the Checklist Wizard—our tool to help you get your tasks done (although it isn’t fully rolled out yet, so more is coming). We’re busy updating the iOS app to include all the great functionality that our Android users enjoy. We’d love to hear your feedback as we continue developing the app—please share your thoughts below.

Android updates

We have continued to improve our Checklist Android app and have added the most requested feature: Sorting & Filtering. Although manual sorting has long been supported, you asked for more flexibility—alphabetically, by due date, importance, and creation date. For those who want to hide completed tasks, that option is now available. Read more on how to sort & filter your checklists.

We’ve vastly improved the stability and performance of the app. One of Android’s challenges is its huge fragmentation across devices, which makes a consistent experience difficult to achieve. So please share with us your feedback if the app does not perform well on your specific device—we are here to help!

We’ve also updated the color of the checkboxes for a smoother experience and added the Turkish language. We rely on our community to add new languages and improve existing translations. Let us know if you have any comments or can help us get Checklist in your language. Lastly, we’ve improved the social login integrations (Facebook & Google) for an even smoother sign-in.

Your feedback is what makes us successful, so please share your feedback and suggestions for the future of Checklist.

A word about User Accounts

In the new iOS version as well as the latest Android release, we removed the "try without account" option (SKIP). This change has received some negative feedback, so we wanted to explain our rationale.

There are many reasons to use a Checklist account, including automatic backup, syncing across devices, and checklist sharing. Over the years, users who chose not to have an account ended up losing their phone or accidentally deleting the app—and with it, their checklists. Without an account, there was no backup and nothing we could do to help. We decided to ensure this never happens again.

Developing and maintaining an app for both "guest" and "user" modes is complex, and we like to keep things simple (without sacrificing power!). This is 2017, and social logins are everywhere. Using Google or Facebook sign-in simply makes it easier to get started; we never sell or trade your data. There is no "evil conspiracy."

Still not convinced? We listen to our users. Please voice your opinion on our user forum, where we shape our development plans.

A side note: we are working on a new "Recycle bin" feature (TBA). Wouldn't it be great if you could recover a checklist you worked on for so long and accidentally deleted? A cloud backup that keeps deleted checklists in a recycle bin would be awesome—do you agree?

Lastly, remember that Checklist is 100% free. There are no drawbacks to registering and using an account—it’s there for you, our user.

What's next for Checklist?

Beyond bringing iOS up to the level of our Android app, we are busy with Checklist v5. Many users see Checklist as more of a To-Do app than just a checklist tool, and we want to offer a solution for both perspectives. We’ve always aimed to make Checklist a great tool for those who repeatedly "run" checklists, and that is the focus of v5. We’re starting small and planning to grow as we receive your feedback. We can’t wait to share it with you!
