School Daily Opening Checklist

Introduction

Use this checklist for an existing school’s daily opening round. Record the site, time, inspector and duty leader, then check the approved route, named rooms, staff coverage and working communications before arrivals.

The saved starter separates path obstructions from surface damage, and classroom obstructions from visible water, damaged furniture and unavailable resources. Rename or duplicate the checks for each actual location. The school’s responsible leaders and competent site staff define the checks and make opening decisions.

Record the site reference and route label from the school’s current opening plan. Detailed security arrangements remain in the approved system.
Use today’s actual start date and time.
Record the responsible staff member or role.
Record the leader or role authorized to decide opening restrictions or alternatives.
Check today’s approved opening plan and changes with the duty leader. Record the current plan or notice reference in Comments.
Carry forward unfinished work. Confirm who owns each issue before assuming the affected area is available.
Replace starter labels with actual locations. Each required location and condition needs its own result.
Rename with the designated path. Observe objects obstructing the approved walking route from permitted safe access.
Rename with the same path or relevant segment. Observe visible damage without entering traffic or unstable ground.
Use the school’s approved opening procedure. Do not test security vulnerabilities or share entry details.
Observe whether the approved route is available. Refer a blockage to the duty leader instead of improvising an alternative.
Rename with the actual classroom. Observe the walking area for stored items or other obstructions. Duplicate for every required room.
Rename with the actual classroom. From normal access, look for visible leaks or standing water. Do not diagnose the source or enter pooled water.
Rename with the classroom and relevant furniture. Observe visible damage without load-testing or attempting repairs; duplicate if separate items need separate results.
Name the classroom and the specific opening resource, such as the required lesson pack or functioning class display. Replace this example with the school’s defined requirement and duplicate it for independently checked resources.
Rename with the shared space. Observe its walking route for obstructions and follow existing restrictions.
Rename with the approved washroom. Confirm availability from authorized access; do not enter an occupied, unsafe or restricted area.
If included in the school plan, check the named handwashing point for its specified soap supply. Adapt the example to the actual facility and site responsibilities.
If included in the school plan, check the named handwashing point for its specified hand-drying provision, such as paper towels. Adapt the example to the actual facility.
Rename with the approved outdoor arrival area. Observe visible objects obstructing the route from safe access; do not inspect or certify play equipment.
Check required roles with the duty leader using the approved roster. Keep detailed personal rosters out of this checklist.
Where a duty holder is absent, confirm the replacement has accepted the role. A name on a draft roster alone is not confirmation.
Adapt to the school’s approved communications test. Confirm the ordinary work contact path functions without making test calls to emergency services.
Use only the school’s approved radio test if radios are part of the opening plan. Rename/remove this example for the actual staff communication device; keep channel and security details in the approved system.
Check that an authorized person has accepted the reception role for the opening period.
Check the current approved visitor-handling procedure is available to reception staff. Keep expected visitor identities in the authorized system.
If an area or duty is unavailable, record the operational issue and its accepted owner. Escalate urgent concerns immediately rather than waiting for this field.
The named duty leader reviews unresolved route, room and coverage gaps. Record the authorized decision here and its time/reference in Comments. A recorded answer does not certify building safety.
Where the leader approved a change, record a permitted decision reference and the practical instruction staff need. Keep sensitive security details in the official plan.
If the opening plan changed, use the approved staff communication route and confirm the responsible staff received it. The checklist does not send messages.

Details

The starter covers daily operational readiness at an existing school. Keep each observation narrow enough to have one result, and duplicate named-location checks instead of using one classroom result for several rooms.

A route that cannot be inspected remains Not inspected. The duty leader decides the approved restriction or alternative and confirms who will communicate it before arrivals.

Report an unavailable route, unusable room or coverage gap to the responsible leader. Record the approved restriction or alternative and who will communicate it. A completed opening list is not a safeguarding or building-safety certificate.

Who it's for

A school duty leader checks the school’s approved daily opening arrangements and resolves access, room or coverage gaps before arrivals.

How to use

  1. Save a Checklist for today or a Template for the repeated routine. Complete the site/route, start time, inspector and duty-leader fields.
  2. Rename or repeat each location check for every required area. Adapt the labeled classroom, handwashing and communication examples to the school’s approved opening plan.
  3. Open Play and record one answer per observation; use List to review the whole route. Explain skipped, inapplicable or adverse results in Comments.
  4. Confirm duty and substitute coverage, then use the school’s approved communications test. Report gaps promptly with an accepted owner and review time.
  5. Record the duty leader’s decision, any permitted restriction or alternative reference, and whether affected staff received the change. The record itself does not authorize an area to open.

School Daily Opening Checklist Frequently Asked Questions

Is this for opening a new school?

No. It covers recurring daily readiness at an existing school. Establishing a new school requires a much broader approval and preparation process.

Who decides whether an area can open?

The responsible school leader and qualified personnel identified in the school plan. Staff should record the issue and follow that decision, not improvise a safety judgment.

What if a check cannot be completed before arrivals?

Record the affected area or duty, notify the designated leader and follow the approved alternative or restriction. Retain separately assigned follow-up work until the issue is resolved.

How should a school cover several buildings or entrances?

Label each location check and repeat it for every area in the approved route, or create separate runs with clear ownership. Each required location needs its own result; one completed classroom check must not stand for the whole site.

Should staff put the duty roster or access codes here?

No. Use readiness status and an approved record reference. Detailed rosters, security arrangements, visitor information and pupil records remain in the school’s restricted systems.

Does this create a daily schedule or reminders?

No. Reuse the saved Template according to the school’s existing routine. Staff still start each run, communicate urgent issues and arrange follow-up through the approved process.
