Retail Store Opening Checklist

5.0/5 with 1 votes

Introduction

Use this checklist for a daily opening shift at an existing store. Review the previous close, prepare customer areas and sales systems, and make the opening decision with any restrictions visible.

This is not a new-store launch plan or a full safety audit. Use the retailer’s own entry, security, cash and equipment procedures, and keep access codes and other secrets outside the checklist.

Play guides the opening shift, with List available for shared checks. Fill the store/date/time/keyholder fields, then work through concrete customer-area and checkout-device examples tailored to your store. Record the manager’s decision separately from the actual opening time.

Follow the store’s approved security process.
Identify the store/site for this opening run.
Use the store’s local time; state the timezone in run notes.
Name the person accountable for the opening and the escalation decision. Keep the approved opening procedure available.
Review unresolved security, equipment, stock, cash or cleaning issues. Confirm the current state and owner.
Look for visible damage or unusual conditions before entering and follow the site’s escalation procedure. Do not improvise entry or security actions.
    Make the trading area usable.
Check the entrance, sales-floor routes and exits under the approved site plan. Report or control a blocked or unsafe route through the store’s procedure; do not improvise an exception.
STARTER AREAS: Rename, remove or duplicate these examples for the actual store. Check each applicable area under the store’s readiness rules; leave an unresolved correction separately assigned.
Rename or remove before use. Check the applicable rooms, customer access and readiness under the store’s procedure. Record an unavailable room and manager decision.
Rename or remove before use. Confirm the counter is ready, required supplies are available and there is an assigned service owner. Record a restriction or missing essential resource.
Rename or remove before use. Confirm the collection station is usable and the authorized team can access the order queue. Keep customer/order details in the approved system; record only a readiness issue/reference here.
Confirm agreed cleaning, waste, lighting and customer-area supplies. Record work that remains and the person handling it.
Check who is present, opening coverage, breaks and planned deliveries/appointments. Resolve essential gaps with the manager.
Verify the actual setup, not just that devices are powered on.
Use the store’s approved startup check to verify POS sign-in and a permitted product lookup or scan. Record an unavailable sales service and the approved fallback, if any.
Use the approved test-print procedure. Confirm the intended printer produces a legible receipt and has the required supplies. Record a failed printer and the responsible owner. Do not create an unauthorized sale just to print a receipt.
STARTER DEVICE: Rename to the actual checkout scanner or remove if unused. Scan one approved sample SKU and verify that the POS shows the correct product/variant and current price; record the SKU and mismatch in task notes. Duplicate if stations need independent results.
STARTER DEVICE: Rename to the actual terminal or remove if unused. Use only the retailer/provider’s approved connectivity and readiness checks. A ready screen is not a completed payment test. Record a fault and the manager’s authorized next step; do not make a live charge.
Authorized staff confirm the required cash setup and record discrepancies through the retailer’s cash process. Keep security-sensitive details elsewhere.
Spot-check displayed promoted SKUs against the approved campaign and POS price. Remove or correct expired or mismatched signs through the authorized process.
Check key displays and promised items. Assign replenishment or customer-facing availability changes to the appropriate owner.
    Make one informed opening decision.
Share role coverage, offers, deliveries, known issues and escalation contacts. Confirm staff know any controlled restriction.
The manager reviews critical checks and outstanding issues, records the opening decision/time and assigns any continuing follow-up. A completed checklist does not waive the site’s controls.
Record the actual manager, decision time, restrictions or delay reason, and separate open correction owners/tasks. Recording Delayed completes the decision observation, not the unresolved opening work.
Complete only after the store actually opens. Leave blank while delayed; note the reason in the decision record.

Start with the handover

Yesterday’s fault or stock shortage may still affect today’s opening. Confirm the current status and responsible person before repeating routine checks.

Check the service customers will use

Verify the sales floor, fitting rooms or other relevant areas, staff coverage and the real POS/scanner/printer setup. Spot-check current promotional labels and prices so the first transaction does not reveal an avoidable mismatch.

Distinguish a blocker from follow-up

A blocked exit, unsafe entry condition or unusable essential sales system needs the site’s approved escalation decision. Minor replenishment work may be assigned during the shift. Record that distinction; a tick does not authorize an exception.

This is not a new-store launch plan or a full safety audit. Use the retailer’s own entry, security, cash and equipment procedures, and keep access codes and other secrets outside the checklist.

Who it's for

A store keyholder and opening team prepare a trading shift, verifying premises, staff, POS and promotional readiness before customers enter.

How to use

  1. Save a checklist for one opening shift, or tailor a reusable template. Complete store, date, planned local opening time and keyholder.
  2. Link the retailer’s approved opening procedures in the run notes. Rename, duplicate or remove the customer-area and scanner/terminal starter checks for the actual store.
  3. Use Play for the sequence or List to assign area and station owners. Review the previous close, then verify premises, actual staffing and essential sales services.
  4. Perform only approved device tests. Record concrete promotion samples, device results and any missing coverage; create separate owned correction work for faults.
  5. The responsible manager records Ready, Restricted or Delayed and the dated decision evidence. A recorded decision does not override a critical blocker.
  6. Record the actual opening time only after customers are admitted. Keep continuing restrictions and follow-up visible for the next shift.

Retail Store Opening Checklist Frequently Asked Questions

Is this for launching a new store?

No. It covers routine daily opening. New-store setup needs a separate launch plan.

How much cash should a till start with?

Use the retailer’s approved float and cash-handling procedure. This checklist deliberately gives no universal amount.

Should every issue delay opening?

Use the site’s decision rules. Record critical blockers and obtain the responsible manager’s decision; assign ordinary follow-up without hiding the issue.

What should I check on the POS before customers arrive?

Use the retailer’s approved startup tests for sign-in, product lookup or scanning, receipt printing and required connected devices. Verify actual operation instead of stopping at a powered-on screen. Record unavailable services and have the manager approve any permitted fallback.

How do I handle an issue left by the closing team?

Read the previous handover, check the current condition and confirm the responsible person. Keep unresolved opening blockers visible in the manager’s readiness decision; give ordinary follow-up an assignee and due date.

Can I reuse this for each opening shift?

Save a reusable template, tailor it to your store’s areas and procedures, and start a fresh checklist for each opening. Use the store’s actual scheduling process if needed; saving the template does not itself schedule a daily run.

Can I remove areas or checkout devices we do not have?

Yes. The fitting-room, service-counter, click-and-collect, scanner and terminal tasks are labelled starter examples. Rename or duplicate them for your real areas/stations, and remove irrelevant examples before using the template. Keep essential store-specific checks from the retailer’s procedure.
