Find the Scotland behind the story

Outlander’s fictional journeys travel much farther than many of its filming locations. Fife’s Falkland becomes Inverness, Dysart Harbour becomes Le Havre, and Perthshire’s Drummond Castle Gardens becomes Versailles. Glasgow contributes buildings and parks to scenes set elsewhere, while Scottish woods stand in for North American wilderness. The Country and Region fields tell you where to travel; On screen tells you what you are recognising. VisitScotland’s filming guide↗ covers the original series across seasons one to eight, while its downloadable brochure covers seasons one to four.

Start with a base and choose a sensible regional group. Edinburgh’s Old Town closes are walkable city stops, while Midhope, Blackness and Linlithgow need separate transport planning. Fife rewards a village-and-harbour itinerary. Doune and the Stirling area suit a different day from Glasgow or the Highland landscapes. Calke Abbey is in Derbyshire, England, and works as an extension to an English trip rather than a nearby Scottish stop.

Match the ticket to the scene you want

Lallybroch is the classic example: Midhope Castle is an exterior and grounds visit, including the familiar approach and steps. Its interior is derelict and is not part of admission. Hopetoun House, a different destination on the wider estate, has filmed rooms and grounds of its own. Some guided Hopetoun tickets include Midhope, so read the current package rather than assuming you need two admissions or that one ticket always covers both. The owner’s visitor information↗ explains the distinction and the transport limitations.

At other properties, grounds access does not guarantee the filmed interior. Ask specifically about Callendar House’s kitchen, Glasgow Cathedral’s lower church or the rooms included on a house tour. Drummond is a gardens visit, not admission to the castle. Keep seasonal houses and by-arrangement churches ahead of flexible park stops when choosing dates.

Build visits around places, not every camera angle

Culross village and Palace share one completion item, as do Falkland village and Palace. Their notes distinguish public streets from paid interiors without turning every doorway into another destination. Midhope and Hopetoun remain separate because they are distinct visitor stops, even when a ticket package combines them.

Later-season destinations add variety to a return trip. Duncarron supplied Fort Ticonderoga, while Calke’s stableyards became Savannah. At Calke, follow the National Trust’s filming walk↗: it also includes another production, so not every room or stop belongs to Outlander. Eglinton Country Park adds a season-eight exterior setting, identified by VisitBritain↗.

Enjoy the real communities and landscapes

Falkland, Culross, Edinburgh’s closes and Dysart are living places. Leave entrances and working harbour areas clear, and use public areas rather than following screen action into private property. At forests, rivers and ruined castles, choose established visitor routes. A scene involving water, a wall or a hidden cave is not a suggested activity.

The catalogue focuses on visit destinations from the original Outlander series. Blood of My Blood-only locations, historical sites associated with the story and private filming properties are not quietly added as extra visits. Craigh na Dun’s stones were props, and the private filming field is not offered as a drop-in stop. You can still build a rewarding historical extension, provided you keep that separate from checking off actual filming locations.

For another castle-and-landscape collection, explore Game of Thrones filming locations. Compare a wider British screen trip with Harry Potter filming locations, or a longer-distance journey with The Lord of the Rings filming locations. For US-based routes, see Twilight filming locations and Stranger Things filming locations.

Who it's for

For Outlander fans planning a first Scottish filming trip, returning visitors looking beyond Lallybroch and Castle Leoch, and mixed-interest groups who also enjoy historic buildings, gardens and walks. The locations cover the original series, with light scene spoilers and a clearly identified English extension.

How to use

  1. Browse Country and Region to choose your travel area. Scottish and English destinations both sit under United Kingdom; Region distinguishes them and narrows the local area.
  2. Use On screen to find Lallybroch, Castle Leoch or another remembered setting. Check Type and Access before deciding whether you want an exterior stop, a house tour or a woodland walk.
  3. Open the notes to check the scene connection, visitor boundaries and official source. Put seasonal or book-ahead destinations into your travel plan before flexible public streets and parks.
  4. Choose Start tracking to save the whole catalogue as one checklist. Filters only change what you browse, not the locations saved. Mark a destination complete after your visit and retain the rest for future trips.
  5. Use Save & Compare to compare visit progress with your travel group. Before travelling, confirm the relevant admissions and transport with the linked visitor information.

Outlander Filming Locations Frequently Asked Questions

Where was Outlander filmed?

Scotland supplies many of the original series’ castles, towns, interiors and landscapes, including scenes set in France and America. This catalogue also includes Calke Abbey in Derbyshire, England. It is a visitor-focused collection, not a claim to list every production location or every country used by the series.

Can you go inside Lallybroch?

Midhope Castle is the real Lallybroch exterior. Its visitor ticket covers the grounds, approach, courtyard and steps, not the derelict interior. Check the owner’s current arrangements↗ and organise your return transport before going.

Are the Craigh na Dun stones real?

The standing stones used for Craigh na Dun were props placed at the filming site near Kinloch Rannoch. They are not a surviving ancient circle that you can visit there. This catalogue does not send visitors into the private filming field. Real stone circles can make a separate heritage outing, but should not be checked off as the Craigh na Dun set.

Was Outlander filmed at Culloden Battlefield?

Culloden is important to the story and Scottish history, but the battle sequence was recreated elsewhere. Treat a visit to the battlefield as a historical extension rather than a filming-location completion. The National Trust for Scotland explains the distinction↗.

Do I need a car for an Outlander trip?

You can build walking visits around Edinburgh’s Old Town or parts of Glasgow, but rural estates and scattered locations need more transport planning. Midhope’s owner specifically advises that it is not served by public transport and return taxis can be difficult. A prearranged tour or suitable transport may help; do not assume every destination is reachable in one day from a city base.

Does this include Blood of My Blood locations?

This checklist focuses on the original Outlander series. A property that appears in both can still be included for its original-series role, but a prequel-only location is not added on that basis. Start tracking saves this whole original-series catalogue, even when you are browsing a single region.
