Choose a real travel region first

The original Game of Thrones series assembled its world from widely separated locations. Northern Ireland offers a useful mix of estate visits, forest walks and coastal scenery. Croatia combines Dubrovnik’s waterfront and fort with separate excursions to Trsteno, Split, Klis and Šibenik. Spain’s locations span Andalusia, Catalonia, Extremadura, Navarre and the Basque coast, so a single country filter is a starting point rather than an itinerary. Iceland, Malta and Morocco offer further distinct trips. The official Northern Ireland screen-tourism guide↗ is a useful starting point for the northern locations.

Build each day around a small number of places you actually want to explore. A garden or fortress with booked admission needs a different plan from a weather-dependent coast walk. Put the time-sensitive visit first, then add nearby outdoor stops if the conditions work. The country and region fields describe the real destination; the On screen field describes the fictional setting.

Recognise what survives from the screen

Real architecture, temporary scenery and visual effects often share the same shot. Gaztelugatxe offers Dragonstone’s famous approach, but the immense castle was created for the screen. Gradac Park’s wedding decorations were temporary. Castle Ward and Audley’s filming areas form one estate visit in this catalogue, while Split’s palace cellars and Peristil form one palace-complex visit. This keeps completion focused on meaningful destinations rather than counting every shot as another trip.

The Game of Thrones Studio Tour in Banbridge is a different experience: an original studio location with sets, costumes and production displays. It has its own Type value so you can distinguish it from the outdoor catalogue. Book through the official Studio Tour↗, and do not confuse it with Titanic Studios in Belfast.

Turn access information into a workable plan

Read the location note before you book travel. Public exterior means you can plan around the outside setting, not that all surrounding buildings are open. Ticketed monuments have their own calendars; some grounds and gardens are seasonal. Gaztelugatxe requires a free reservation on controlled days, as shown by the official authority↗. A beach or marked trail still depends on conditions on the day.

Use public paths and official visitor entrances, keep working harbours clear, and give residents space in historic settlements. On Icelandic and Northern Irish landscapes, the view is often the reward: a visit does not require a glacier crossing, cave entry or cliff-edge pose. Kirkjufell is best treated here as a ground-level landscape stop, following official visitor guidance↗.

Keep the series boundaries clear

This catalogue concerns the original Game of Thrones series, not House of the Dragon or A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Commemorative art trails and tour stops with no verified filming connection are not counted as filming destinations. Several genuine filming properties have no established visitor access, so a source confirming filming is not treated as permission to enter.

For a Scottish castle-focused journey, explore Outlander filming locations. For other kinds of screen travel, compare Harry Potter’s British locations with The Lord of the Rings locations in New Zealand, or plan a US trip around Stranger Things filming locations and Twilight filming locations.

Who it's for

For Game of Thrones fans building a multi-trip collection, travellers adding a filming stop to an existing holiday, and groups comparing castles, towns and outdoor scenery. The catalogue serves the original series and keeps the official Banbridge studio experience clearly labelled. Scene descriptions contain light spoilers.

How to use

  1. Use Country and Region to browse a realistic travel area. For Northern Ireland, choose United Kingdom under Country.
  2. Use On screen to find a fictional setting, then compare Type and Access to distinguish a fort interior, a public exterior and an outdoor walk. Read the notes for the actual visitor experience and source links.
  3. Choose Start tracking to save the whole catalogue as one checklist. Filters help you browse; they do not limit which locations are saved.
  4. Mark destinations complete after visiting them, keeping unvisited places for later trips. One checkbox represents a destination, including the named sublocations in its note.
  5. Use Save & Compare to compare the places you have visited with friends. Confirm tickets, transport and access with the linked official sources before travelling.

Game of Thrones Filming Locations Frequently Asked Questions

Where was Game of Thrones filmed?

The original series used locations in Northern Ireland, Croatia, Spain, Iceland, Malta and Morocco, alongside studio work. This catalogue covers source-supported visitor destinations in those places. Northern Ireland belongs under United Kingdom in the Country filter; the fictional settings do not follow modern national borders.

Can you visit Winterfell?

Castle Ward in Northern Ireland supplied the principal early-series exterior setting and is included as an estate visit. The screen castle was altered with sets and visual effects. Doune Castle in Scotland has a separate pilot-filming connection, so it should not be substituted for Castle Ward when planning the main Winterfell location visit. See Historic Environment Scotland’s filming account↗.

Where is King’s Landing in real life?

King’s Landing was assembled from several real places. Mdina supplied season-one scenery, Dubrovnik supplied many later locations, and Spanish locations include Girona and Cáceres. Use the On screen filter and each destination’s notes rather than expecting one real city to contain every scene.

Can you visit Dragonstone’s castle?

The famous stepped approach is at San Juan de Gaztelugatxe in Spain, but the screen castle is not a building you can enter there. Other Dragonstone imagery came from separate coastal locations. Check the official Gaztelugatxe calendar↗ for days requiring a free reservation.

Can I visit filming locations without a guided tour?

Many public towns, waterfronts and managed visitor attractions can be visited independently, following their admission and access rules. A guided tour can help with transport or scene interpretation, but it cannot override private-property restrictions. Read the Access field and official source for each stop.

Does saving a filtered view save only those places?

No. Start tracking saves the entire catalogue as one checklist. Country, Region, On screen, Type and Access filters are for browsing. You can track this trip while retaining the other destinations for future journeys.
