Check the records first
Before comparing totals, make sure the month's transactions are included and categorized. Check refunds and reimbursements, and avoid counting transfers between your own accounts as spending.
Look at the differences
Compare actual income and spending with your plan. Note what caused any large difference and whether it is likely to happen again. Check upcoming bills and known one-off costs before updating next month's budget.
Keep track of questions
If you find an unfamiliar charge, missing receipt or subscription to review, make a separate follow-up task. You do not need to finish every follow-up during the budget review.
