Questions to Ask Horse's Owner
How long have you owned the horse?
Why are you selling it?
Does the horse have any current health problems?
Has the horse ever had colic, ever foundered or ever tied up?
Does the horse have health papers?
How old is the horse?
What has it been used for?
Are its vaccinations current?
Does it have any vices, such as cribbing?
How does the horse get along with other horses?
Has it ever been shod and how does it respond to the farrier?
When were its teeth last floated?
How does it bathe and clip?
Is it registered?
Does it need a special diet?
Buying a Horse
Have a vet evaluate your prospect for soundness before purchasing.
Pay attention to the horse's attitude and disposition.
Choose your discipline and objective, and stick with it.
Choose a breed you prefer, but be willing to look at other breeds for comparison.
Set a price range.
Set an age limit, but be open to a span of five years around that age.
Figure out ahead of time what questions you want to ask the seller.
Choose a horse with good, quiet ground manners.
Choose a horse you can develop a relationship with.
Decide what perfect-horse aspects you can sacrifice in order to meet your budget.
