Choose your John Grisham reading order
Publication order lets you follow the development of Grisham’s writing, starting with A Time to Kill in 1989. The list uses original book publication years, so a paperback reissue or special edition keeps its place alongside the original work. You can also follow a particular series or choose a standalone that suits your interests.
For a first courtroom novel, try A Time to Kill or The Rainmaker. For a lawyer drawn into a larger conspiracy, start with The Firm or The Pelican Brief. Readers interested in small-town life can choose A Painted House; sports readers have Bleachers, Playing for Pizza, Calico Joe and Sooley. These are starting-point suggestions, rather than a ranking of the books.
John Grisham series in order
- Jake Brigance: A Time to Kill → Sycamore Row → A Time for Mercy. The novella Homecoming, included in Sparring Partners, brings Jake back for a shorter story. The collection has one entry here, covering all three of its novellas.
- Mitch McDeere: The Firm → The Exchange. Read the first novel before the later international thriller to meet Mitch and Abby at the beginning of their story.
- Camino Island: Camino Island → Camino Winds → Camino Ghosts. The series follows the literary community around bookseller Bruce Cable and writer Mercer Mann.
- Lacy Stoltz: The Whistler → The Judge’s List. The short prequel Witness to a Trial adds background to The Whistler.
- Sebastian Rudd: Rogue Lawyer introduces his unconventional practice. Partners, published afterward, is a short prequel about his relationship with his driver and bodyguard.
- Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer → The Abduction → The Accused → The Activist → The Fugitive → The Scandal → The Accomplice. Follow this order for Theo’s friendships and recurring cases.
- The French Illusion: the short prequel The Law Student introduces Stuart Nash before the novel’s international investigation.
Several unrelated novels also take place in Ford County, Mississippi. A shared setting can add familiarity without creating a required sequence for every book set there.
What the 57 entries cover
The main catalogue contains 42 adult novels, seven Theodore Boone novels, two nonfiction books and two collections. Four supplementary short works complete this reading list: The Tumor, Partners, Witness to a Trial and The Law Student. The Type and Scope fields distinguish a full novel, a collection and a shorter read.
Ford County: Stories contains seven stories, including Fetching Raymond. Sparring Partners contains Homecoming, Strawberry Moon and its title novella. Reading a separately sold story contributes toward its collection; it does not create a second completion entry here. Likewise, the special edition of Skipping Christmas is the same novel for this reading record.
For nonfiction, The Innocent Man follows Ron Williamson’s wrongful-conviction case, while Framed, co-written with Jim McCloskey, examines ten cases. Readers exploring collaborative writing may also enjoy Fourteen Days, a novel to which Grisham contributed alongside other authors; it sits outside this author-book checklist.
Keep a reading record with friends
Check off titles as you finish them, then save your list to keep updating it. Save & Compare creates a group in which each person updates their own checklist. You can see which books you have both read and find different starting points for a reading conversation, without sharing one person’s reading record as a joint task list.
Continue your reading
For a different kind of mystery, explore Agatha Christie books. For suspense that often turns supernatural, browse Stephen King books.
Who it's for
How to use
- Choose a reading path. Browse by first publication year, or use the Series and Book type filters to find a particular series, standalone novels, nonfiction or shorter works. Open a title for its description and check the series guidance before starting a sequel.
- Mark the works you have finished. Check off each book once, whatever edition you read. A collection such as Sparring Partners has one entry: finish its included stories before marking the whole collection complete.
- Keep your personal reading list. Choose Start tracking and, if prompted, sign in or create an account to save your progress. Return to the saved checklist as you read more. Filters narrow what you browse, not the catalogue that gets saved.
- Compare reading with friends. Choose Save & Compare to start a group. Each person marks books in their own checklist, making it easy to spot shared reads and ideas for the next book.
